Visiting Japan for the cherry blossoms, known as Sakura in Japanese, is a truly magical experience that captivates travelers from around the world.

The cherry blossom season is short-lived, typically lasting only a few weeks from late March to early April. This adds to the allure and makes it a must-see event for visitors.

You will see cherry blossoms create a breathtaking display of delicate pink and white flowers that blanket parks, gardens, and streets across Japan. The sight of these blossoms against traditional temples, modern cityscapes or serene countryside landscapes is simply mesmerizing.

Japan is a treasure trove of historical and cultural wonders, each city offering a unique window into the country's rich heritage and modern vibrancy.

In Tokyo, Japan's bustling capital, iconic landmarks like Tokyo Tower stand tall amidst the skyline, offering panoramic views of the cityscape and Mt. Fuji on clear days. Nearby, Shibuya Crossing mesmerizes with its sea of pedestrians crisscrossing at one of the busiest intersections in the world.

Kyoto, on the other hand, has serene temples and traditional districts. Strolling through Gion, Kyoto's historic geisha district, transports visitors to a bygone era with its preserved machiya townhouses and glimpses of geiko (geisha) gracefully gliding through the streets.

Meanwhile, Osaka offers a contrasting allure with its bold modern architecture and bustling street food scenes. The Umeda Sky Building and Abeno Harukas showcase Osaka's skyline. Down at street level, Dotonbori dazzles with its neon lights and variety of food stalls offering local specialties.

          Delicious Cuisine

Japanese cuisine is a testament to culinary artistry, renowned for its diverse flavors and meticulous preparation techniques. Each region of Japan offers its own culinary delights, ensuring every meal is an exploration of taste and tradition.

In Tokyo, dining experiences range from savory bowls of ramen in cozy noodle shops to elegant kaiseki meals that showcase seasonal ingredients in exquisite presentations.

Osaka, known as the "Kitchen of Japan," is a paradise for food lovers. Here, street food reigns supreme in places like Dotonbori, where vendors grill skewers of yakitori over charcoal and serve up piping hot takoyaki, crispy octopus balls drizzled with savory sauces.

Fresh seafood lovers can indulge in Osaka's vibrant fish markets, where sushi and sashimi are prepared with precision and served alongside local delicacies like kushikatsu, deep-fried skewers of meat and vegetables.

No discussion of Japanese cuisine is complete without mentioning sushi, a quintessential dish that epitomizes the country's dedication to quality and craftsmanship. In Japan, sushi is an art form, with chefs selecting the freshest seafood and mastering the delicate balance of flavors in every bite.

          Rich Culture & Customs

Japan's culture is characterized by a profound respect for order and harmony, evident in daily interactions and public spaces. From the meticulous cleanliness to the courteous demeanor of its people, we consistently felt welcomed and secure throughout our journey.

One of the things that impressed us most about Japan's culture is the emphasis on cleanliness and quietness. Littering is virtually non-existent, and people speak in hushed tones in public spaces. This creates a calm and peaceful atmosphere that is unique to Japan.

          Money & Tipping Etiquette

In Japan, cash is king, and tipping is not customary, which is a refreshing change for most travelers. Transactions typically include all necessary fees, making budgeting straightforward. For convenience, carrying yen for smaller purchases is advisable, though credit cards are widely accepted in major establishments.

          Pro tip:

In July 2020, Japan instituted a mandatory charge for plastic bags at grocery and convenience stores. Most cashiers will begin the transaction by asking if you'd like a plastic bag, so respond "hai" if you'd like one or "iie" if you don't.

          The Language

While English is spoken in tourist hubs, Japanese remains predominant outside these areas. Overcoming language barriers is manageable with basic phrases or translation apps. Locals appreciate efforts to communicate in their language, enhancing your cultural experience.

           Pro tip:

Take time to learn a few phrases in Japanese that you can use daily. For example, after finishing a meal in Japan (especially at a ramen or sushi bar), tell the chef or restaurant staff, "gochisousama deshita," which means "thank you for the meal." It's bound to make them smile.

          Go in 2025!

Over our many years of traveling, we have made four attempts to see the northern lights: once in Iceland and thrice in Alaska. We have learned many interesting facts about this incredible natural phenomenon, so we wanted to share some of them with you!

          1. Predicting the northern lights is very difficult.

Scientists have learned many things about the northern lights over the years; however, despite having improved technology and expanded knowledge, predicting the northern lights over the long term remains difficult. You see, strong auroras occur during solar storms, and one of the main causes of these storms is coronal mass ejections. These ejections are forecasted 15 days in advance, but their strength and shape can vary once they get closer to Earth.

To predict solar activity, forecasters and aurora seekers use the KP index. A KP level of 0 means very minimal activity, while a KP level of 9 indicates an extreme storm (sometimes visible in lower latitudes like California, France, and even northern Spain). This being said, KP index forecasts should be taken with a grain of salt. Strong auroras have been seen when KP indexes indicated lower likelihoods. For example, while in Alaska in January 2023, we witnessed a large solar storm and incredible aurora displays despite the forecast only showing a KP level of 3.

          2. Weather has a big impact on viewing probability.

The northern lights occur high in the atmosphere, usually above GPS satellites, spy planes, and even the ozone layer. This means that while they are unaffected by the weather occurring lower in the atmosphere, they can often be blocked from view by storms and clouds. On two of our aurora sighting attempts, inclement weather stopped any chance of seeing the northern lights.

All that being said, you can plan your aurora hunting in months of the year when clear skies are more common. For example, the northern lights can be seen in Fairbanks, Alaska from about August 21 to April 21; however, the clear skies of January, February, and March lend to greater viewing probability.

          3. Darkness is key.

When Paul Simon wrote the famous line, "Hello darkness, my old friend," I don't think he was talking about the northern lights; however, when searching for the northern lights, darkness is a welcome friend. Because the aurora borealis is a luminous glow, other light sources can compete with them and even drown them out.

Make sure to visit the auroral oval during months with long nights and short days as the optimal viewing window is from 8 PM to 3 AM. When choosing a location to view the northern lights, choose somewhere far from any city lights with minimal light pollution. Ensure that exterior lights are turned off, and any interior light sources are blocked from view. Bring a tripod to steady your camera and ensure you have either a long-exposure or astrophotography mode on your camera.

          4. There are actually different types of aurora.

The aurora borealis can take many shapes and sizes. Scientists have divided these auroral forms into broad categories based on activity level as well as the viewer's perspective.

          Homogenous arc

At its least active, the auroral curtain forms diffused, glowing streaks hanging quietly in the sky. This form has no distinct structure.

          Rayed arc

When the aurora becomes slightly more active, vertical stripes or striations, called rays, form. These are actually fine pleats in the auroral curtain.

The auroral curtain sometimes appears to touch a distant mountain top or even rise like smoke. This illusion occurs because you are seeing a several-hundred-mile-long aurora near the horizon where perspective gives the illusion that it is touching the ground.

The aurora may appear as rays shooting out in all directions from a single point in the sky. This dramatic form occurs when you are directly beneath the swirls and folds of an active curtain. The rays are actually hundreds of miles long and perspective makes them appear to converge.

Records from ancient civilizations show that different groups had different theories about what the northern lights actually were. In the 4th century BCE, Aristotle likened them to flames of burning gas. Norwegians theorized in the thirteenth century CE that the lights were reflections from Earth's oceans. Across the world in Alaska, some Inuit groups saw the lights as the spirits of the animals they had hunted, including beluga whales, seals, salmon, and deer. In Japanese culture, the aurora is associated with good luck and fertility!

Are you thinking about planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip to trek the magnificent mountains of Nepal? Nepal is a fun and exciting place to visit. It's unique, inexpensive, and full of friendly people. Additionally, Nepal offers some of the most beautiful and challenging trekking in the world. Below are some things to plan on and be aware of heading into your next big adventure!

          Kathmandu, Nepal

There are many convenient flight options and hotels when you travel to Kathmandu. We'd recommend finding a hotel in Thamel, a commercial neighborhood in Kathmandu. There are many restaurant options here, shops to pick up any last-minute trekking gear, or gifts for loved ones back home.

Most trekking companies will help you with transportation once you arrive in Nepal as part of their standard offering. The roads here are narrow, and the traffic is chaotic. Don't plan to rent a car. The roads are in bad shape. They are full of potholes when they're paved, and getting around is bumpy and uncomfortable. Be aware that if your trek departs from Pokhara, it's about a 7-hour, bumpy bus ride from Kathmandu. If you have the option for a flight, something to consider.

          Mount Everest

The tallest mountain in the world attracts adventurers from around the world. For serious hikers, several different trekking companies can take you from Kathmandu to Everest base camp in 10-12 days.

Alternatively, there are hour-long flights from Kathmandu every morning, where you can view the beautiful peaks from the comfort of an airplane. Since we chose a shorter trek, this was our next best opportunity to see this beautiful landmark. Unfortunately, while the flights were convenient and inexpensive, getting a ground-level perspective was impossible, and the peak wasn't as pronounced as we expected. Still worth seeing, but if you take the flight, set your expectations accordingly.

          What to Bring

The weather throughout Nepal can be dramatic and unpredictable. While it's often warm in Kathmandu and Pokhara, many treks will take you to the mountains, where it will be chilly, especially at night and in the early morning. You'll want your standard trekking gear, including comfortable hiking shoes/boots, hiking socks, a hydration pack, a hat, sunglasses, and sunblock. Our first day was hot before quickly cooling off on days 2 and 3. Don't forget a headlamp, and winter hat, and warm gloves. The hiking snacks we found in the town were underwhelming, so throwing a few granola bars in your pack might not hurt before leaving home.

Finally, leave your trekking poles at home, as these can quickly and inexpensively be bought in either Kathmandu or Pokhara. We paid about $6 for new poles and didn't have to worry about them getting bent or damaged in transit or taking up space in our suitcases.

We did a 5-day/4-night Poon Hill and Ghorepani trek out of Pokhara. This trek was rated "easy," and our guide even referred to it as the "Apple Pie" trek. Overall, we had a great time, took lots of pictures, and got a first-hand look and how many local people live in the mountains of Nepal. The highlight was waking up early on the 3rd morning before sunrise to climb to the top of Poon Hill for sunrise. This was the coldest section. Don't forget your winter clothes, including your long underwear, hat, and gloves.

This trek was delightful and an excellent option for most seasoned hikers. The days weren't too long, and while there were challenging sections, we never found it too difficult to press on. Our guide, Raj, was great. Very friendly and very knowledgeable.

As for the sleeping arrangements, the tea houses along the way come equipped with simple dorm-style rooms, with just the basics, down to two beds and a bathroom. Electricity and hot water were hit-and-miss, but that added to the adventure. The staff at the tea houses couldn't have been friendlier about providing as much food as we wanted and extra pillows and blankets. While we aren't big campers, sleeping when you can see your breath was something we look back on and laugh about. Don't forget your body wipes and toilet paper. Otherwise, four nights in the tea houses wasn't too bad and something we'd be comfortable doing again when visiting Nepal.

          Food

The food in Nepal is similar to India. Lots of curry-based cuisines, which we enjoyed very much overall. The famous staple dish in Nepal is "Dal Bhat," which consists mainly of rice, lentil soup, and vegetable curry. This is the most memorable meal among the locals as it's wholesome and provides the needed nutrition.

On the advice of our guide and out of an abundance of caution, we ate vegetarian throughout our 5-day trek. Everyone knows their own body best, but if you're prone to a sensitive stomach, the mountains of Nepal are not where you want to have an upset stomach. We did eat chicken, red meat, and fish in Kathmandu without any issues. We didn't opt for any street food, but we enjoyed the restaurants we visited.

          Nepal's Major Challenges

Nepal is an impoverished country, towards the very bottom of GDP in the world rankings. The infrastructure - including most buildings and roadways - is old and in inferior repair. The people are extremely friendly towards visitors and are grateful for any visitors they get. While certain areas trekking through the mountains can be awe-inspiring, others are covered in litter, which was discouraging to witness.

Finally, Poor air quality and climate change are significant challenges facing Nepal. The pollution is evident as soon as you arrive and poses the second highest risk factor for death after malnutrition. Although much of the electricity here is generated from clean hydroelectric sources, road traffic and the burning of garbage and biomass are the most significant contributing factors.

          Final Thoughts

Nepal is a fascinating country and a must for every serious hiker and trekker. Of course, it's not luxurious, but those looking for an adventure are encouraged to check it out!

8 Things to Know When Visiting Bali

After living in Bali for 2 months, here are 8 tips you should know when planning a trip — from where to stay and traffic to beach clubs and excursions.

There is no escaping the beauty of Bali. If you scroll through social media under #wanderlust or #travel, you're bound to see a few posts about the island. From its beaches to its jungles, there is something for nearly everyone! After living in Bali for 2 months, here are 8 tips we think you should know when planning a trip to Bali.

          1. Where to Stay

Plan ahead, do your research, and think about where you want to stay while in Bali. Getting around the island can take some time, so decide what you like best and center your stay there. Brian and I got an opportunity to stay in several different spots, including Canggu, Ubud, Seminyak, and Sanur beach. We quickly found each was unique and had its own strengths and weaknesses.

Canggu is a small coastal village on the southern end of Bali. It has seen a surge of growth over the past few years which has made it one of the most desirable locations in Bali (and for good reason). It mixes the restaurant and night scene of Seminyak with the rice fields and greenery of Ubud while maintaining a colorful charm of its own.

Ubud is a top-rated destination close to the center of Bali. It's deep in the jungle and home to multiple temples and rice terraces. It's centrally located and close to many tourist attractions and popular restaurants. Simply put, Ubud is beautiful! If you plan on leaving the jungle for any beachside destinations, we recommend budgeting a few hours of travel time each way.

Seminyak is easily one of the most popular places in Bali. It has some of the best restaurants, bars, shopping, and night life on the island. It is also right on the beach, and has access to some incredible beach clubs. All this being said, it is one of the busier places on the island, so if you're seeking a more quiet ambiance, other destinations might fit the bill better.

Our favorite spot based on our preferences and lifestyle was Sanur beach. We loved the laid-back atmosphere, having breakfast by the ocean, and avoiding most crowds. If you're looking for bars and night life, Seminyak is a better choice.

          2. Traffic

Bali has seen immense growth over the past few years, and unfortunately the infrastructure on the island hasn't quite been able to keep up (though improvements have been made, such the Bali Mandara Toll Road providing better access to the airport). That being said, the traffic in Bali can be hectic and challenging. Narrow roads are shared by cars, scooters, and pedestrians, so getting around can be time consuming. Hiring a driver by the day is an affordable and convenient option for days you want to spend several hours exploring. Make sure to factor in plenty of drive time when you choose to go sightseeing. We found Google Maps to be quite accurate in calculating the time it would take to get from place to place.

          3. Taxis & Food Delivery

We highly recommend downloading the "Grab" app to your phone before your trip. Grab is the local food delivery and transportation app similar to Uber/Uber Eats. We found this to be very convenient, especially when we didn't want to leave the Airbnb to grab a couple of small things. Prices are very reasonable too!

Regular taxis are also available and very cheap, especially in tourist areas like Canggu and Seminyak. It's important to ensure the driver uses a meter, otherwise you should be ready to negotiate the price ahead of time. Unfortunately some will try and overcharge you a flat rate for a short distance if they know you're a tourist. Double-check the price against Grab and be prepared to negotiate accordingly. Carry exact change as they won't give you change if you only have large bills.

          4. Scooters

Bali residents use scooters as their main form of transportation, and it's easy to see why! Navigating the narrow streets on a scooter is faster and easier than in a car. You'll see scooters for rent everywhere, but proceed with caution. The price is reasonable, but navigating the traffic can be intense, and a scooter crash is almost sure to ruin your trip. Brian spent a few hours at the hospital one afternoon (non-emergency) and watched numerous tourists leave with a cast, some road rash, or a tinge of regret from overestimating their scooter driving skills.

          5. Walking

Walking is often the best way to get to know a new place, but walking in Bali can be tricky in busy areas. Many sidewalks are in bad shape (or nonexistent), and the narrow roads are often not conducive to pedestrians. Pay attention to your surroundings as you're walking around to avoid any accidents. If walkability is important to you, investigate the area around your hotel or Airbnb to ensure there are sidewalks or wider roads. Otherwise, taxis are plentiful and provide a quick way to explore your surroundings.

          6. Money & Shopping

Bali is a cash-heavy island. Many shops, spas, and local restaurants don't take credit cards, and the ones that do may charge you an extra 3% to cover the fees. If you want to pay by credit card, make sure you have a card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees. If you need to withdraw extra cash once in Bali, ATMs are fairly common around most towns.

As with many tourist destinations, shopkeepers may approach you and try to sell you their wares. We found most are very respectful if you say, "No, thank you." If you choose to shop, make sure to barter. Every situation is a little bit different, but most of the time, asking for 30-40% off the price is entirely normal and not offensive. Shop in the afternoons and evenings as vendors tend to get tired and are more likely to make deals later in the day.

Prices are very fair, and US dollars go a long way in Bali. For example, 1 million IDR equals about $67 (as of August 2022). A one-hour full body massage rings in around seven US dollars at most places you'll find while out and about. Luxury/high-end spas will usually run a bit higher, but they are still affordable when compared to other countries.

          7. Beach Clubs

Bali has some great beach clubs, and this was one of our favorite activities on the island. Make reservations, and plan on spending a good part of the day there if you choose to visit one of them. You'll pay a retainer amount up front to reserve your spot, but that money goes towards the food and drinks you order while you're there. Plan on about $70/person depending on the club. One Eighty, Finns and Potato Head were our favorites.

          8. Additional Excursions

Do your research, read reviews, and choose your tours carefully. We found some incredible tours, cooking classes, and excursions while in Bali, but several that we signed up for ended up being very underwhelming. For example, we did two different snorkeling adventures, and one was dramatically better than the other. We enjoyed the Bali Swing, rice terraces, and monkey forest; however, you can skip the hot springs and the Luwak coffee (also known as "cat poop coffee").

          Final Thoughts

12 Things to Know When Visiting Thailand

After 6 weeks living in Thailand, here are 12 things you should know before visiting — from costs and cash to culture, climate, and visa rules.

For the past six weeks, Thailand has been our home. In April 2022, we left Colombia and made the journey to Southeast Asia to begin our Thai adventure. While the nearly 30 hours of flight time was absolutely brutal (remind us to never book flights with crazy layovers ever again), the destination was worth every minute on the plane.

Thailand is simply a specular country. From the Elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai to the beautiful white sandy beaches of the Phi Phi Islands, there is something for everyone. Before you head to Thailand, here are 12 things we think you should know:

          1. Thailand is a must-visit destination.

First things first: would we recommend Thailand? Absolutely yes! Thailand is stunning and has something for travelers of all budgets, preferences, and travel styles. It is very straightforward to travel around with many low-cost flight and train options.

          2. Thai people are incredibly friendly.

Thai people may be the nicest people we have encountered in our travels. Thailand is nicknamed the "Land of Smiles," and we can see why after spending six weeks here. Everyone we have met has been amicable and welcoming.

          3. Thailand is VERY far away from the United States.

We mentioned it before, but we'll say it again: getting to Thailand can be a very long journey. We flew 13 hours from LAX to South Korea and then another 6 hours to Bangkok. Due to the extra time it takes to get here, we recommend planning to stay at least ten days. Your plane ticket from the United States won't be cheap, but moving around the country is easy and affordable once you get here.

          4. Many Thai people speak English (kind of).

Most people recognize enough English words to help you find the restroom or order at a coffee shop, but don't expect to have a long, in-depth conversation with most Thai people. Ordering food must be very basic. Once you start asking for their recommendation, suggestions, or ordering anything specific, that is where you will quickly encounter the language barrier.

          5. Thailand is very affordable.

This place spoiled us; it won't be easy to go anywhere else with how inexpensive things are here. We often spent our days enjoying a relaxing massage and a high-quality Thai meal for about $12 and $6 US dollars respectively.

          6. Speaking of money, cash is king.

We found just two places that accept credit cards on the whole island of Koh Yao Noi. Outside the larger cities, businesses only accept local currency (Thai Baht). Plan to take local money out of the ATM or exchange cash at a bank. You will need your passport to exchange cash at a bank or currency exchange. If you plan to get a local Thailand SIM card for your phone, get it after you leave the bank. You'll need your Passport to get a SIM card for your phone as well (very strange, but true).

          7. The Internet is great.

We spent a month on a remote island and had no issues doing video conferencing calls. For digital nomads who rely on fast, reliable Internet, Thailand is a solid option.

          8. Yes, there are creepy crawlers.

The insects were the only true negative we encountered here. We don't love bugs or lizards, so the number of critters everywhere was challenging. We stayed in an overwater Airbnb and usually got visitors almost every night. Thankfully, we spent a few different nights at hotels researching future retreat locations and didn't have any bad experiences there. If you stay at an Airbnb, do not leave out any food or drinks. The ants here are no joke.

          9. It's sweltering and humid.

The climate was definitely an adjustment for the first few days. The best advice is to dress appropriately and embrace it. Don't plan on regularly doing your hair or make-up. There is no real point; your skin will be glowing after a while! The sun is no joke. You will burn, so apply the sunscreen liberally throughout the day.

          10. Be aware of the effect of religion in the area you visit.

As in every country, religion can plan a large part in the culture of an area. For example, there is a strong Muslim community where we stayed in Koh Yao Noi, so alcohol is not sold in some places. Pork dishes can be rare and hard to find as well in certain areas. Our advice? Embrace the culture, including the religious aspects of it, and make sure to always be respectful.

          11. Bring comfortable slip-on shoes.

You must take off your shoes before entering temples, certain restaurants, massage parlors, etc. The Asian culture is very conservatively dressed, so make sure you have your shoulders and knees covered when entering temples. My husband, Brian, wore flip-flops every day without issues. The last thing, while not usually a problem for Americans, nudity and nude beaches are absolutely not allowed in Thailand.

          12. Be careful with long, extended stays.

You can't stay longer than 30 days without having to go through the headache of going to an immigration office and applying to stay longer. While it only costs about $50, it took up our whole morning the day we did it. They only give out 300 extended visas a day,

so go early in the morning

if you choose this route. Alternatively, you can "border hop" as another option, meaning you leave for a few days to a nearby country and then come back to get another 30-day visa for no cost.

          13. Thailand is a must-visit destination.

Would we recommend Thailand? Absolutely yes! Thailand is stunning and has something for everyone. It is very straightforward to travel around with low-cost flight and train options.

Top 5 Things to Do in Argentina

From tango shows in Buenos Aires to hiking Patagonia, here are the top 5 must-do experiences when visiting Argentina.

Argentina should be on every traveler's list, especially when visiting South America. The people and the culture are fascinating, and there is a ton to eat, drink, see and do. Below is our list of the top 5 must-do's when visiting this wonderful country.

          5. See a Tango Show in Buenos Aires

"Music goes in my ears, is filtered through my heart, and comes out through my feet." – Dany Garcia, Argentine tango maestro

Tango has magic. In fact, authentic tango does not include any choreography but instead is entirely spontaneous and includes a sequence of steps that the men indicate to their tango partners almost telepathically. In addition, tango tells stories of Buenos Aires and each neighborhood within it.

Many of the shows available are very affordable and can include dinner as well, so you can make an evening of it. We visited Madero Tango, which included dinner along with the show. The food was a prix fixe menu and included unlimited drinks and an appetize and dessert. People arrive late, and the shows typically start after 10:00 pm but aren't overly long. The show we saw lasted a bit over an hour, which was perfect given the late start time. Highly entertaining and gave us a good feel for the entertainment and culture of Buenos Aires.

          4. Do a city tour of Buenos Aires

No trip to Argentina would be complete without a visit to the capital city of Buenos Aires, and a city tour is a great way to get your bearings and the lay of the land when you arrive. City tours are abundant and accessible, reasonably priced, and offered in English and Spanish. We had a free day the morning after we came and signed up for a small group city tour for the same day. It ended up being six of us and lasted about 4 hours in total.

The first stop along the way was the Plaza de Mayo. At one end of the plaza is the Cabildo of Buenos Aires, the old seat of the country's government. Although previously in this location there has been a Cabildo from the city's foundation, the current building began to be built in 1725. The Cabildo has witnessed numerous critical historical events, such as the May Revolution. Undoubtedly, this building is one of the essential patrimonies in the history of Argentina.

At the opposite end of the Plaza de Mayo is Casa Rosada, the stately mansion and office to the President of Argentina. The defining characteristic of this structure is the unique baby pink color making it one of the most emblematic buildings in Buenos Aires. Legend has it that there were not many colors available with which to paint during its construction at the end of the 19th century. So, they painted the building pink because the color was formed when mixing lime and cow blood: a color very used at that time. It definitely makes it stand out!

After departing Plaza de Mayo, we headed next to Caminito, Buenos Aires' famously colored street museum. This famous pedestrian street is made distinct by the colorfully painted houses and its deep historical and cultural significance in La Boca. It was a bit touristy for obvious reasons, but we found it very charming and unique. Don't visit La Boca after dark – It's not an overly safe area after the sun goes down. But, during the daytime it is lovely.

From Caminito, we then headed to the final stop at Recoleta Cemetery, one of the most famous cemeteries in South America. This cemetery commemorates some of Argentina's most celebrated people, home to over 6,400 statues, sarcophagi, coffins, and crypts. It was a strangely beautiful and unique place, with seemingly endless rows of famous deceased Argentines. The most famous resident here is Eva Peron, former first lady to the President portrayed by Madonna in the 1996 film Evita, and the song "Don't Cry for Me Argentina ."It would have taken days and days to see the entire cemetery, but we hit the highlights and got some photos as the sun was beginning to set, and we were starting to get hungry.

The Buenos Aires city tour overall was a lot of fun. Our guide was excellent and very informative, and we got to see a lot of the different neighborhoods and parts of town in a single afternoon. Highly recommend.

          3. Go wine tasting in Mendoza

One of our favorite parts of travel is experiencing each country and each region's unique culture, specifically the local food and beverages. Many of our retreats include these activities because of how much you can learn through eating and drinking and the history of what makes it unique. Mendoza was no exception, and as avid wine enthusiasts, we knew we had to try some of the local red wines, which did not disappoint. Mendoza wine tasting is a must for your trip if you love wine.

After breakfast, our guide picked us up at our hotel and drove us to Lujan in the Mendoza wine region, which was maybe 15-20 minutes outside of the city center. The entire area is hot and dry and similar to the famous wine regions in Northern California. It was a private tour, just the two of us along with the guide. We aren't avid cyclists but still found the ride very mellow and leisurely. Although it started as a hot sunny day, finding shade was easy, and the ride was fun and relaxing.

We visited three wineries, but it was a slow leisurely pace and took most of the day. We had plenty of water, as well as lunch, so crashing our bikes was not too big of a concern. We started feeling a bit sleepy by the third winery, but this activity was an absolute highlight for us. TIP – Mendoza is famous for producing the most Malbec in the world. The Malbec's here are fantastic. Also, make sure you try the Torrontes (White table wine) as well as Bornada. These were new for us, and we loved both.

          2. Experience an Argentine Food/Wine Experience

Vegetarians beware – Argentines LOVE their steak. Thankfully so do we, so we signed up for not just one but two separate food & wine experiences. We've done food experiences and cooking classes around the world (literally), and Argentina absolutely lived up some of the best that we have done. If you love food (especially steak), there are a bunch of different food experiences you should try. We did

and had a blast. We played a game to identify smells before making three various Argentine cocktails. We made our own empanadas, had filet mignon, and got to try mate, the traditional South American caffeine-infused drink. We met some fellow Americans, and the night ended flying by. So sign up for a food & wine experience while you're here. You won't regret it!

          1. Hike Patagonia

Yes, the number one reason to visit Argentina should be to hike Patagonia. Located at the very southern tip of the country is El Calafate, a tiny and remote town situated on the border between the Santa Cruz plateau and the Andes Mountain Range, where you can fly in. From here, take the 3-hour bus ride to El Chalten, the Argentine trekking capital, where you'll find the trailhead to Laguna De Los Tres and Torre Lagoon. The scenery is breathtaking, and the pictures do not do it justice.

We hiked all 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) in a single day. Not for the faint of heart, and honestly, only something I would recommend for the most avid hikers. There are several campgrounds along the way, and if you could break up the hike over a couple of days, you'd likely have much more time and not be near as worn out at the end.

What you need to know about traveling to New Zealand

Planning a trip to New Zealand? Here's everything you need to know — from flights and seasons to Milford Sound, Waiheke Island, tipping, and more.

New Zealand is far away! The best way to travel to New Zealand is through LAX and you are looking at a 13-14 hour plane ride. Most people fly into Auckland, which is in the north island and then will fly to the south island for more exploration. You will skip an entire day completely if coming from the U.S. I would say you want to spend at least 10 days in NZ

If coming from the U.S, now is the time to travel to NZ. The exchange rate is amazing. I would recommend installing the XE app and using that to keep track of the conversion rate but it is definitely in our favor right now! NZ is currently cheaper than Australia.

In case of emergencies, dial 111 to get connected to ambulance services, the fire department or the police. When you call, you will be prompted to state which service you are looking for before you're referred to a dispatch operator.

Plan according to the season. If coming from the U.S, NZ is opposite seasons than we are. Pack layers. I traveled during one of the most popular times, Lunar New Year ( February). Maybe do not do this. Hotels will jack up their prices and it is much more expensive than say later in Feb or even March.

      We really loved

    Waiheke Island

. Its a short ferry ride from Auckland and I could have spent more than just a day there. Beautiful beaches and tons of wineries!

There are several flights a day to take you to the south island. We flew from Auckland to Queenstown for cheap through Jetstar.

From Queenstown, Milford sound is really a must but please be aware...it is FAR! Its about a 4 hour drive each direction. If you have the funds, I would opt to take a tour via plane from Queenstown to Milford sound. There are plenty of tour operators right in Queenstown. You may also want to look into an overnight stay on a boat to Doubtful sound.

Bartering is not acceptable in NZ.

You don't really tip waiters in New Zealand unless you've received exceptional service.

I would not personally recommend planning a day trip around the glow worms. While they are cool, I thought they were a bit overrated. You may want to try booking a tour that included Hobbiton AND the glow worms.

We stayed at the Hilton Queenstown and the Hilton Auckland. Both were very nice hotels. We received 4 out of 6 nights at no cost due to my husband and I both getting the Hilton credit card in advance and using our points earned to pay for our stay. We booked our stay about 8 months in advance.

Fun fact: In New Zealand there are approximately 9 sheep to every human!

Hints and Tips When Traveling to Egypt

      · If you must take a taxi, then it would be best if you asked the reception/concierge of your hotel to get you one. They have assigned taxis that they know very well, and deal with on a daily basis.

      · First and foremost, prepare yourself for a culture shock! Many seasoned travelers are amazed when they first visit Egypt and find that it is unlike any other country that they have previously visited!

      · Egypt is a Muslim country, so please respect their faith. Many things that you take as the norm, such as kissing and/or fondling your partner in public, wearing revealing clothing etc., are frowned upon here, so try and be more conservative in your attitude. Homosexuality is actually illegal in Muslim countries!

      · Never drink the tap water! It is okay to wash, shower and clean your teeth with it, but not advised to drink. Bottled water is cheap and plentiful; use it instead!

      · In Egypt, they drive on the right, be careful when crossing roads. Take special care in Cairo, where the traffic is a lot busier than in other Egyptian cities – especially outside the Egyptian museum! The UK and Japanese travelers should be extra careful, as you will be used to traffic driving on the left.

      · Get your entry visa at your destination airport; it often works out cheaper than getting it at home. Also, you can exchange your $, £ or Euro at the same time – the conversion rate is far better in Egypt!

      · Internal flights by Egypt Air must be booked in advance as well.

      · Buy (and drink) plenty of water. You will find it a lot cheaper to buy in the various shops than at your hotel or cruise boat. You may not drink a lot of water at home, but make sure you do in Egypt. It is very easy to become dehydrated if you don't.

      · Remember that Egypt is a 3rd world country and has many poor people who think that all tourists are rich, no matter where they come from in the world! Learn the phrase "la shukran" (no thank you) and don't be afraid to say it to anyone who tries to sell you anything, or asks for "baksheesh". Believe it or not, it does work. Please do not say "emshi" (as many tour books advise), this can be taken as an insult.

      · If you forget the expression "la shukran", just politely say "no thank you" and walk away. Don't get abusive to the trader; he is only trying to feed his family.

      · If you feel that someone is being too pushy, let a member of the Tourist Police know. You will see them everywhere in Egypt and their job is to protect you.

      · Admission to all sites is payable in LE, so make sure that you carry enough with you. Try and plan each day in advance, work out how much you will need for admissions, and keep this money separate from your spending money.

      · Be prepared for delays when entering some sites. Because of the threat of terrorism, you will have your personal belongings (camera bags, carrier bags etc.) searched before gaining admittance. Though this is annoying, it is for your safety! Also, on some sites, they may find video equipment, which they will take from you. Don't worry, you will get it back! It is just that certain sites do not allow videos to be used.

      · Take a small pocket flashlight with you when visiting the sites. Many tombs, temples etc. use the natural light for illumination (including a local with a large mirror, reflecting the light!) and a small flashlight can be very handy. A small mirror, such as the one in a ladies makeup, can also be used to highlight a relief. Please Note: Do not take one of the really bright halogen torches, you could cause damage to the monuments!

      · Once developed for cleaning the parts underneath a babies nappy / diaper, "Wet Wipes" (the small, damp, tissue usually bought in a plastic tub) are becoming more and more popular with adults. They are also very useful when traveling in Egypt. When you have felt the relief's in a Temple, touched the hieroglyphs in a Tomb, caressed the stones on the Pyramids etc., you only have to take one of these wipes out to instantly clean your hands. No more looking for a washroom!

      · Make up a small "medical-kit" before you go! Include things like safety pins, plasters (different sizes), antiseptic cream, diarrhea tablets, headache tablets and sunscreen (high factor advised).

      · Take a box of cheap ballpoint pens. The children (and many adults) are very happy when you hand them out, handy for baksheesh.

      · When shopping for bargains, keep your own currency and credit cards out of sight, and separate from your LE. It is easier to haggle over a price if you can show that you have only a few Egyptian pounds in your possession! Plus, some traders may try and insist that they meant $ or £, instead of LE, if they see that you are carrying them.

      · Wear sensible footwear when visiting the various sites. High heels and open toe shoes are not advisable. The floors of most sites are either sand or rough-cut, with uneven stone. Inside many tombs, wooden floorboards have been installed, but thin heels could get caught in the gaps between the floorboards.

      · Many monuments have signs that say " No Flash Photography", please obey these signs (you can be ejected from the site if you ignore the sign!). The very bright flash can cause serious damage to some of the ancient paintwork!

      · Some reliefs have depictions that show male genitalia – this is not pornography, so there is no reason to be offended! If you are part of a group (of any size) the leader/guide will explain the reason for the depiction.

      · When visiting the West Bank sites at Luxor, again take plenty of water with you! You will be there for either ½ day or a whole day (with a break for lunch) and it can become very hot, drink a lot of water to avoid dehydration!

      · Ladies, if you intend visiting the inside of one of the pyramids, please wear trousers (or jeans). You may have to ascend/descend ladders and/or crawl through narrow passages. For the same reasons, I would advise men to avoid wearing shorts.

      · Do not buy anything from the traders inside the Giza Plateau! The items they are trying to sell you can be bought a lot cheaper at places like the Khan El-Khalili. Also beware the many people offering you camel rides, as they are not all genuine! Head for the main stables if you want a camel ride, or better still, arrange one at your hotel.

      · If you go to the Citadel, try and ignore the traders selling "papyrus" pictures, as the "papyrus" is made from banana leafs, they are not genuine papyrus! Also, if you buy some from one trader, another will approach selling you "pictures that the other man did not have"! To get mementos here, there are some stalls between the bus park and the old bank, where the traders are better to deal with, and not so pushy.

      · And don't forget that is always a good idea to bring mosquito repellent for open-air night events! It helps to minimize the "mosquito annoyance factor"!

      · You know what your stomach is like! Just because you are on holiday don't treat it differently, if you have a sensitive stomach and tend to stay to a certain type of diet, try and do the same when you are Egypt. Err on the side of caution; you do not want to ruin a great holiday because you have eaten something you would never have tried at home. Some people are lucky, they seem to be able to consume anything and everything, others become ill by simply looking at a different food. You may feel brave by trying something different, but sometimes you are better by being a coward and enjoying your stay.

      · Wash your hand always before eating. this contributes a lot to the cause of your travel sickness.

      · Only bottled water must be used, as waters in the Egyptian cities is said to be highly chlorinated. Also, there should be ample care taken when eating out to prevent the occurrence of travelers' diarrhea, which is a very common health concern that most people face when traveling to a new country.

      · And finally: Please do not let this list put you off going to Egypt. It has been compiled from questions that people regularly ask, and complaints that travelers have experienced. This list is to help make your visit as enjoyable as possible.

What makes Walker Wellness Retreats a "Wellness Retreat"? It's more than yoga and spa days — discover the balance of adventure, culture, and relaxation.

What makes Walker Wellness Retreats a "Wellness Retreat"?

When most people think of a wellness retreat, words like detox, yoga, and meditation come to mind. While we do incorporate wellness in all that we do, and while we do plan customized activities such as hiking, yoga, and time for reflection into our retreats, there is a lot more to wellness retreats than you may think.

When is the last time you went out of your comfort zone to try something new? Did you know that going out of your comfort zone can increase your confidence? Doing something you think you couldn't or wouldn't do, doing something hard, going across the ocean, going across the globe, accomplishing a goal you had for yourself all does indeed improve your self esteem and self-confidence.

Previously, I had always associated the idea of wellness travel with a spa or yoga retreat. While we do give you the option for spa treatments, quiet time and yoga classes, we also know you travel to seek adventure, learn about the culture, enjoy the food and take in the sights. Walker Wellness Retreats strives for the perfect balance of adventure, culture and relaxation. We want to redefine what "Wellness Retreats" look like.

How would it be to just show up and everything is taken care of for you? We take the stress out of planning, organizing and the hassle of trying to find where you are going, driving in a foreign country where you cant read the signs (been there!), language barriers, the list goes on and on. We have researched the best accommodations, the best local tour guides, the off the beaten path locations and activities so all you need to do is show up and everything is done for you.

We travel as a small group. With some rare exceptions due to the activity or flight time, we do not wake up at 6AM everyday to start our full day of sightseeing. We don't want you to feel like you need a vacation from your vacation when you get home. We avoid the 50 passenger tour buses rushing you from place to place. We have a private driver and guide for our group only. We bypass the awkward mealtimes abroad where everyone is trying to figure out their portion for the check—we take care of it for you. All meals are included in your luxury, all-inclusive adventure. What's more wellness than that!?

Throughout the week, our itinerary includes various adventure, culture and spa-focused activities based around mindfulness, movement and nourishment. While we have activities as a group, we encourage you to spend your time doing what you like, therefore, all activities are completely optional. The schedule designed for you provides you with the opportunity for adventure, sightseeing and down time.

Full disclosure, I'm no yogi, but I appreciated having the opportunity to do different types of yoga every day if that is important to you. With Walker Wellness Retreats, we plan customized activities around what YOU want to do. If yoga is important to you, we will arrange yoga classes. If you want to spend your time relaxing and getting massages, we will book and arrange spa treatments for you. So, when you show up for your retreat, everything is arranging for you based on what you want to do!

Let me know where you would like to travel to next and how I can help you turn that goal into a detailed, custom itinerary for you! what is a wellness retreat

Hiking the Inca Trail To Machu Picchu

Hiking the Inca Trail in Peru is not only stunning but it is a very rewarding adventure. I have put together my top 10 tips if you plan on hiking the infamous, and breath-taking Inca Trail:

          1. The trail is the journey. Its more beautiful than pictures would lead you to believe. Pictures do not give the mountains justice! I live in Utah and still the mountains were breath-taking. They are huge!

          2. You must hire a guide. You are not able to do the trail on your own. I would recommend Valencia or G adventures. They all offer the same thing: porters, meals, equipment, etc.

          3. I would recommend booking your trip at least 8 months in advance.

          4. You have to fly to Lima and then take another plane to get to Cusco. I would recommend LATAM airlines. In my opinion, there isnt a whole lot to do in Lima so I wouldn't recommend staying more than a day.

          5. Altitude sickness is a real thing. I would recommend you get to Cusco at least 3 days before you hike.

          6. Cusco has everything you could need for the Inca trail so if you dont want to pack it and bring it with you, you can buy it in Cusco.

          7. Make sure you take some local currency out of the ATM before your trek for snacks and tipping.

          8. STAIRS! Oh there are a lot of stairs. I would train for this hike by hiking at elevation and by using a stair master.

          9. Dead Womens pass is no joke but going down the miles of stairs after is almost as brutal. Hiking poles and maybe even knee support/straps are important.

          10. If you think you will be up for hiking Wayna Pickchu, another small hike after you hike the Inca Trail, you are probably wrong. You WILL be tired :) Only 1 out of 8 hiked Wayna Pikchu after our Inca Trail Hike. inca trail to machu picchu machu picchu hike

Why I created Walker Wellness Retreats:

I created Walker Wellness Retreats because I feel traveling changed my life for the better and I want to share the positive impact travel can have with the world. Travel makes the world not so large. It opens your mind to new ways of thinking. I have a masters degree and believe with all my heart I learned more as an international English teacher traveling the world than I ever did in a classroom. I created Walker Wellness Retreats because I have a lot of experience traveling. I have traveled to over 50 countries and have done all sorts of traveling...from backpacking and staying in hostels to budget large group travel to luxury five star resorts. I found out what I like and what I don't like. My preferences may not be yours and that is okay! I don't like the 50 passenger buses with the headsets and trying to keep up with the groups ( but this is an inexpensive way to see the world), I don't like camping ( my recent retreat to Peru reminded me of this when I had a panic attack in the tent because it turns out I am legit claustrophobic), and I don't like staying in hostels ( I stayed in one recently in Amsterdam to give my sister a taste of budget travel and sharing a room with 14 strangers cost the same as a nice hotel 5 miles away for some odd reason so I listened to someone snoring below me for nothing!)
With being a social worker as my full-time gig, I can't necessarily afford five-star luxury vacations all the time. With Walker Wellness Retreats, I'm able to use my experience of traveling and finding deals to pick and plan incredible adventures with the goal of bringing like-minded travelers together to incredible places around the globe!
